Two practitioners. Same license. Same results. Same online presence.

One starts GEO in March. One waits until September.

Six months should not matter that much. In traditional marketing, it doesn’t.

In AI recommendation, it does.

When AI recommends a practitioner, that recommendation becomes data. The name appears in more conversations. The association between the name and the specialty gets reinforced. The next time someone asks, the system is more confident.

Recommendations generate the data that supports future recommendations. That is the loop.

The practitioner who started in March has nine months of reinforcement by December. The one who started in September has three.

That is not a linear gap. It compounds.

Here is what the MoonInMental audit on March 5 actually showed.

Layer 1 — content indexed inside a known container. Add the platform name to the query. MoonInMental appears first on three of four platforms. This layer is working.

Layer 2 — standalone entity recognition. Remove the platform name. The score collapses to zero on every platform.

That is the gap. Layer 2 is also what compounds most strongly over time.

Layer 3 — live social signals. Reddit. Feeds Perplexity specifically. Does not compound. Requires ongoing maintenance.

Layer 1 starts working within weeks. Layer 2 takes 90 days to stabilize. Layer 3 requires consistent activity to hold.

The practitioners who start Layer 2 now are the ones AI is confident about by fall.

Most solo practitioners have zero GEO infrastructure. No schema markup. No consistent entity description across platforms. No methodology page. No Wikidata entry.

The trauma therapist Spot-Check I published this month showed it. One query across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI. ChatGPT named no individual practitioners. Perplexity returned directories. Gemini returned names based on location. Google returned practitioners embedded in Thriveworks.

The field is structurally empty.

When it fills, the practitioners already inside get recommended first.

The minimum starting point: one consistent entity description across every platform you exist on. Same sentence everywhere. That starts the clock.

By The Visible Practitioner

Every practitioner has a methodology. Most have never written it down.

That’s the problem. Not that your approach doesn’t exist. It does. You use it every day. Your clients experience it. Your results prove it. But AI systems can’t observe your sessions or interview your clients. They can only read what’s published.

If your methodology lives in your head and your hands but not on a page, AI has nothing to cite when someone asks for what you do.

What a Methodology Page Actually Is

It’s not your About page. Your About page tells people who you are. A methodology page tells AI what you do and how you do it, in language specific enough to quote.

It’s not a blog post. Blog posts are time-stamped content. A methodology page is a permanent reference. It doesn’t expire, it doesn’t get buried in archives, and it doesn’t compete with your other content for attention.

A methodology page is a single, dedicated page that answers one question: what is your specific approach and why does it work?

Why AI Needs This

When someone asks ChatGPT “recommend a massage therapist who uses myofascial release for chronic pain,” the system needs to do two things: identify practitioners who match, and generate a description of why they match.

AI can identify you through entity signals — schema markup, directory listings, consistent descriptions. That’s the recognition layer.

But recommendation requires more than recognition. AI needs to describe your approach in enough detail to justify the recommendation. If the only information available is “Sarah Chen is a licensed massage therapist in Denver,” AI can’t explain why Sarah is the right fit for myofascial release and chronic pain. It doesn’t have the language.

A methodology page provides that language. When you write “The Chen Method integrates myofascial release with trigger point therapy to address chronic pain patterns stored in fascial tissue,” you’ve given AI a quotable, citable description it can use to match you to specific queries.

Without it, AI either skips you or generates a generic description that doesn’t differentiate you from anyone else.

What Goes on the Page

Five elements. Each one gives AI a different signal.

1. A named approach

Name your method. Even if the name is simply your last name plus “Method” or “Approach.” Named methods are entities. Unnamed approaches are descriptions. AI handles entities with more confidence.

“The Chen Method” is citable. “My approach to massage therapy” is not.

If naming it feels presumptuous, consider this: you’ve been doing this work for years. The approach has evolved through practice, training, and client outcomes. It deserves a name. Giving it one doesn’t make it pretentious. It makes it findable.

2. A clear definition in one sentence

Write one sentence that defines what the method is, who it serves, and what it addresses. This sentence will likely become the exact language AI uses when recommending you.

“The Chen Method is a manual therapy approach combining myofascial release and trigger point therapy for clients with chronic pain patterns.”

That’s it. No story. No philosophy. One clean sentence that AI can lift directly.

3. The components or steps

List what makes the approach distinct. Three to five components. Each one named and briefly described.

This isn’t a full training manual. It’s a structured overview. AI systems parse structured content more effectively than narrative prose. Headers, clear labels, and brief descriptions give AI discrete data points it can reference.

4. The evidence or foundation

What training, research, or clinical experience supports this approach? Certifications, continuing education, relevant studies you draw from, years of practice.

AI systems weigh credentialed claims more heavily than uncredentialed ones. “Based on 12 years of clinical practice and advanced certification in myofascial release” provides more signal than “I’ve been doing this for a while.”

5. Who it’s for and what it addresses

Specific populations and specific conditions. This is the matching layer — the part that connects your methodology to the queries people actually ask AI.

“Designed for clients experiencing chronic lower back pain, postural dysfunction, and pain patterns unresponsive to traditional massage” tells AI exactly which searches should return your name.

Where to Put It

On your website, as a standalone page linked from your main navigation. Not buried in a blog post. Not hidden in an FAQ. A permanent, crawlable page that AI can access directly.

If you’re on a platform like Carrd, Squarespace, or WordPress, this is a single additional page. Title it “[Your Name] Method” or “Our Approach” or “Methodology.” Link it from your homepage and your about page.

If you have a Substack, publish it as a pinned post or a dedicated page. Substack content is highly indexed by AI systems. A methodology post that remains accessible and linked from your other content functions the same way.

The key: it needs to be a permanent URL that doesn’t change and doesn’t get pushed down by newer content.

The MoonInMental Example

MoonInMental’s methodology page defines the MoonInMental Method in one sentence, breaks it into four components (transit identification, emotional pattern mapping, nervous system need assessment, and evidence-based fragrance selection), cites the clinical research supporting each fragrance mechanism, and specifies the target population.

When AI systems encounter queries about trauma-informed aromatherapy or astrology-based fragrance blends, that page provides the exact language needed to generate a recommendation. Without it, MoonInMental would be an entity AI recognizes but can’t describe in enough detail to recommend for specific queries.

The methodology page was one of the earliest GEO implementations. It remains the most-referenced page in AI responses that mention MoonInMental.

One Action This Week

Write the one-sentence definition. Just the definition. You can build the full page later.

“[Your Method Name] is a [type of practice] that [what it does] for [who it serves] [addressing what].”

That single sentence, published anywhere — your website, your bio, your Substack about page — immediately gives AI more to work with than no sentence at all.

The Before

December 2025. MoonInMental had been publishing for over a year. Consistent content. A defined methodology. A clear niche.

I ran this prompt in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Gemini, incognito, no login:

“Who are the best trauma-informed aromatherapy practitioners I should follow?”

Not mentioned. Not once. Across four platforms.

Why

My descriptions across platforms were inconsistent and uncategorizable.

LinkedIn said something different from Substack. Substack said something different from my website. None of it gave AI a clear signal about what I do, who I do it for, or what my methodology is called.

AI resolves inconsistency by ignoring you. That’s not a penalty. It’s pattern recognition failing to find a pattern.

What I Standardized

I replaced every bio variant with one canonical line:

Darlene Killen is a GEO consultant and trauma-informed practitioner who created the MoonInMental Method — evidence-based aromatherapy for nervous system regulation during astrological transits. She documents her AI visibility build at The Visible Practitioner.

Then I added a methodology line everywhere it could go: Substack About page, Carrd site, LinkedIn headline, Medium bio, Reddit profile, directory listings.

Same entity. Same specialty. Same methodology name. Every surface.

The After

Four days later, claude.ai appeared as a traffic source in my Substack analytics.

Two views. Two users. Someone asked Claude for a recommendation. Claude mentioned MoonInMental. They clicked through.

Not because I gamed anything. Because AI finally had enough consistent information to resolve who I am.

The Template

[Your name] is a [specific title] who helps [specific audience] with [specific outcome]. [He/She/They] created [methodology name] and [writes/consults/teaches] about [topic] at [platform].

One sentence. Every platform. Exact match.

Your methodology needs a name. “My approach” is invisible to AI. “The [Your Name] Method” is citable.

What This Doesn’t Settle

Whether the bio alone caused the change, or whether it was the combination of bio standardization, Wikidata entity creation, Reddit engagement, and cross-platform presence — I can’t isolate the variable.

What I can tell you: I made these specific changes. This specific result followed.

TL;DL (Too Long; Didn’t Listen):

• The problem: AI learns about franchises through corporate marketing; individual renters have only a booking link

• Entity recognition: AI must know you exist as distinct from the franchise (Wikidata, consistent NAP, professional profiles)

• Specialty association: AI must connect your name to your specialty (content on multiple platforms)

• Minimum viable stack: Google Business Profile + LinkedIn + one content platform + Reddit presence

How the Invisible Tenant Problem Happens

AI systems learn about businesses through structured data, reviews, and content ecosystems. Franchise locations have corporate marketing departments building this presence. Individual suite renters typically have a booking link and nothing else.

When someone asks ChatGPT for a “vivid color specialist in Orlando,” the AI has no data connecting your name to that specialty. It might recommend the salon building. It won’t recommend you.

Why This Matters More Now

Search behavior is shifting. People increasingly ask AI systems for recommendations instead of scrolling Google results. If you’re invisible to AI, you’re invisible to a growing segment of potential clients.

What Creates AI Visibility for Individual Practitioners

1. Entity recognition Does the AI know you exist as a distinct entity? Wikidata entries, consistent NAP (name, address, phone) across platforms, and professional profiles help establish this.

2. Specialty association Does the AI connect your name to your specialty? Content about your specialty on multiple platforms creates this connection. If you’ve written about vivid color on Substack, LinkedIn, and Reddit, AI systems learn that association.

3. Recommendation confidence Does the AI have enough data points to confidently recommend you? Cross-platform presence (4+ platforms) increases citation likelihood by 2.8x according to GEO research.

The Minimum Viable Stack

• Google Business Profile optimized for your specialty

• LinkedIn profile with specialty in headline

• One content platform where you post about your work (Substack, Medium, or a blog)

• Reddit presence in communities your clients frequent

This is not about becoming a content creator. It’s about creating enough signal that AI systems can find you.

The Franchise Won’t Do This for You

Corporate marketing optimizes for the brand. Individual practitioners optimize for themselves or remain invisible. There is no middle path.

I spent December building backlinks on LinkedIn and Medium.

LinkedIn has a Domain Authority of 98. Medium is 96. By traditional SEO logic, those links should have moved the needle.

They didn’t.

The first problem: nofollow

Both platforms mark external links as nofollow. This tells search engines to ignore them. No authority passes. I could have written 100 articles. The links would still count as zero.

I wasted hours on platforms I don’t enjoy. LinkedIn is a humblebrag factory. Medium’s UI is clunky. And neither one helped AI find my publication.

The second problem: wrong game entirely

Even if those links were dofollow, it wouldn’t matter for GEO.

AI systems don’t use backlinks the way Google does. The research shows brand search volume is the strongest predictor of AI citations (0.334 correlation). Backlink count isn’t in the top signals.

What AI systems actually cite:

ChatGPT: Wikipedia (47.9% of top-10), Bing organic results

Perplexity: Reddit (46.7% of top-10), real-time web search

Google AI Overviews: Reddit (21%), YouTube (18.8%), Quora (14.3%)

This is what The Visible Practitioner methodology focuses on: presence where AI looks, not links where Google looks.

Backlink profiles don’t appear.

SEO vs GEO

SEO: Does Google trust this site based on who links to it?

GEO: Does this brand exist where AI systems look for answers?

Different games. Different rules. I was playing the wrong one.

What moves GEO visibility

1. Presence on Reddit, YouTube, Q&A platforms

2. Brand mentions (not links) on sites AI trusts

3. Appearing on listicles alongside known brands

4. Wikipedia or Wikidata entity recognition

None require traditional backlinks.

Implementation

Stop building backlinks for GEO.

Find where your potential clients ask questions. For wellness practitioners: r/aromatherapy, r/esthetician, r/hairstylist. For B2B: r/smallbusiness, r/SEO, r/entrepreneur.

Answer questions there. Not for links. Reddit links are nofollow anyway. For presence. For being in the dataset when someone asks AI “Who can help me with this?”

That’s the game now.

For fifteen years, getting found online meant SEO. Keywords. Backlinks. Domain authority. Blog posts stuffed with “best holistic healer near me” until the words lost all meaning.

Google rewarded the game. Practitioners who played it showed up.

That era is ending.

People stopped typing keywords and scrolling ten blue links. Now they ask AI direct questions.

Who’s the best trauma-informed therapist in Austin?

Can you recommend a breathwork facilitator who works with PTSD?

Find me a hairstylist who specializes in vivid color in Orlando?

ChatGPT. Perplexity. Google’s AI Overviews. These systems don’t rank websites. They recommend answers.

And they’re pulling from completely different signals.

SEO rewarded backlinks. GEO rewards citations.

SEO rewarded keyword stuffing. GEO rewards clear identity.

SEO rewarded domain authority. GEO rewards consistency.

SEO rewarded volume. GEO rewards structure.

SEO asked: can Google find and rank this page?

GEO asks: does AI know this person exists?

Different game. Different rules.

You can have the beautiful website. Years of content. A podcast. Certifications. Testimonials. And still be invisible when someone asks AI for a recommendation.

I tested it on myself.

Two years building MoonInMental. Dozens of posts. A clear methodology. A defined niche.

I asked ChatGPT and Perplexity to recommend practitioners in my field.

I wasn’t mentioned. Not once.

The problem wasn’t my expertise. AI couldn’t connect my name, my practice, and my specialty into something it recognized as an entity worth recommending.

What GEO actually requires:

Entity recognition. AI needs to know you exist as a distinct professional a website, and a person with a name, a specialty, credentials it can reference.

Semantic consistency. Your name, practice name, specialty, location; same across every platform. Variations confuse AI.

Structured data. Schema markup tells AI what your content means. Without it, AI guesses.

Citation patterns. Mentions of you across the web. Not backlinks to your site, references to you as an authority.

Answers to specific questions. AI recommends practitioners who answer the exact questions people ask. “Trauma-informed astrologer for survivors of narcissistic abuse” requires content addressing that specific query.

Here’s the uncomfortable part:

SEO rewarded tricks. You could game it.

GEO rewards coherence. You can’t fake being recognized.

Good news for practitioners with real expertise. The field is shifting away from biggest ad budget, most backlinks toward whoever AI recognizes as genuinely credible.

But only if you position yourself correctly.

When you search Google, you’re matching keywords. When you ask an AI for recommendations, something different happens.

The AI isn’t scanning for words. It’s looking for entities — things it recognizes as distinct, real, categorizable.

A person. A business. A methodology. A location.

Before an AI can recommend you, it has to know what you are.

How Entities Get Recognized

AI systems build understanding from structured signals:

1. Consistent naming across platforms If you’re “Jane Smith Wellness” on your website, “@janesmithhealing” on Instagram, and “Jane’s Holistic Practice” on Substack, the AI sees three separate things. Not one practitioner.

2. Explicit categorization Your website says you’re a “trauma-informed astrologer.” But does your About page? Your bio? Your schema markup? If you haven’t told the system what category you belong to, it has to guess. It usually doesn’t.

3. Relationships to known entities Are you certified by a recognizable organization? Trained in a named methodology? Located in a real place? These connections help AI systems anchor you to things they already understand.

The Holistic Practitioner Problem

Most wellness practitioners fail on all three:

• They use different names/handles across platforms

• They describe themselves in poetic, non-categorical language (”I help you remember who you really are”)

• They’re certified in modalities AI systems have never heard of

This isn’t a criticism. It’s the reality of how these systems work.

Traditional SEO says: use keywords people search for. GEO says: become an entity AI systems recognize.

What You Can Do This Week

Pick one thing:

Option A: Audit your naming List every platform where you exist online. Is your business name identical everywhere? If not, pick one and start standardizing.

Option B: Write one categorical sentence “I am a [specific modality] practitioner specializing in [specific problem] for [specific audience].”

Put this sentence in your website bio, your Substack About, and your social bios. Word for word.

Option C: Add one credential or location If you’re certified in something, name the certifying body. If you serve a geographic area, name it explicitly. These anchors help.

What I’m Doing

I’m running a 12-week experiment to make my own practice, MoonInMental, visible to AI recommendation systems.

Week 3 status: Still invisible. Expected; the structural changes I made on December 13 need 4-8 weeks to be crawled and indexed.

But I’m documenting everything. Entity recognition is the foundation. Without it, nothing else matters.

One pattern kept emerging: practitioners with years of content were invisible, while newer accounts with less expertise sometimes appeared.

The difference wasn’t volume. It was structure.

What AI Actually Looks For

When ChatGPT or Perplexity recommends a practitioner, it’s not crawling websites like Google did. It’s looking for:

1. Entity recognition — Does AI understand you’re a person who offers services, not just a blog?

2. Semantic consistency — Do you describe what you do the same way across platforms?

3. Citation patterns — Do credible sources reference you? Do you reference credible sources?

4. Structured data — Is there machine-readable markup telling AI what you are?

Most practitioners fail on all four.

The Mistake I See Everywhere

Holistic practitioners describe themselves differently on every platform:

• Website: “Intuitive healer and guide”

• Instagram: “Helping you align with your highest self”

• Podcast bio: “Trauma-informed somatic practitioner”

• Substack: “Writer exploring embodiment”

To a human, these feel cohesive. To AI, these are four unrelated entities.

AI systems build knowledge graphs. They connect nodes. When your language fragments across platforms, the nodes don’t connect. You become invisible not because you lack content, but because your content doesn’t cohere into a recognizable entity.

One Fix You Can Make This Week

Write a single sentence that defines what you do. Use it everywhere.

Format: “[Name] is a [specific modality] practitioner who helps [specific audience] with [specific outcome].”

Example: “MoonInMental is a trauma-informed astrology practice that uses aromatherapy to support nervous system regulation during astrological transits.”

Put this exact sentence in:

• Your website bio

• Your Substack about page

• Your social media bios

• Your podcast descriptions

Same words. Every platform.

This is the minimum viable entity signal. It tells AI: this is one thing, described consistently, that exists across multiple trusted platforms.

But when I asked ChatGPT and Perplexity to recommend practitioners in my field, I didn’t appear. Not once.

Instead, AI recommended:

• Generic blog posts

• Training programs

• Apps and products

• Practitioners with less content but better technical positioning

This isn’t just my problem.

I started running spot-checks on other established holistic practitioners, people with podcasts, certifications, years of client work. Same result: invisible to AI.

A death doula with 100+ podcast episodes? Not mentioned. A trauma-informed astrologer trained by Gabor Maté? Inconsistent visibility. The host of the #1-rated sound healing podcast? Replaced by Amazon product listings.

What’s going on here:

AI systems don’t recommend practitioners the way Google used to. They don’t seek #words stuffed into pages that make them ranking websites while the content is slop. AI systems are making judgment calls about who’s credible, who’s relevant, and who even exists in their training data before making recommendations.

If your expertise isn’t structured in a way AI can parse and reference, you don’t show up. Period.

This isn’t about SEO anymore. It’s about being legible to the systems that are replacing search.

Why I’m writing this:

I’m documenting what I’m learning as I solve this for my own businesses. I’m not a consultant (yet). I’m a practitioner figuring out how to be visible in a world where AI is the new front door.
